• Old school: conversations with kidlet series

squirrelAn Old conversation with my kidlet, when she was about four. We had just seen a squirrel near the street as we were driving down the road and were discussing the animal.

“We need to be careful!” I said. “We don’t want to hurt the squirrel. Squirrels are our friends.” Again, I’m referring to the little furry kind, and not the annoying human kind.

She paused for a minute and thought.

    “Mom?”

    “Yeah?”

    “Can squirrels wear seatbelts?”

To this day, squirrels make me think of my kidlet. I can still see the little mental image I got when she said that, of a little squirrel buckled up sitting next to me, travelling happily along. If we’re friends, after all, we might be giving him a ride!
