Recently, I have a new favorite parenting line.

“Well…I’m sure you’ll figure that out,” I say. It’s great! Or sometimes, I change the wording around a little–”Gee. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that.”

[Snort!] I have yet to say it without a smile on my face.

It’s great. It works for everything. Any kind of complaining, whining, obsessing, questioning, babbling, whatever. Especially any kind of issue. You may toss out an idea here or there, but ya ain’t locked into the kid’s lessons. The coolest thing, about my new favorite parenting line–it feels really good not to feel the need to fix shit.

“I have faith in your abilities to figure out what the Hell you want yourself, and I have faith in my ability to  leave you to that task while I continue having my life. In fact, I wouldn’t have it any other fucking way. Because having it any other fucking way gets old. For everybody, frankly. And it sucks.”

So I like my new approach now. I think I’ll use it for all my social interactions: If you make my brain hurt, I will tune your ass out and take some Allieve stuff and go do something fun instead. How cool is that?
